A Thirty Minute Session with My Sister | KCMO Portrait Photographer

Having a sister is awesome for everyone but, when you are a photographer and you have a little sister who scored all the good looks in the family gene pool, having a sister is a little extra awesome, especially when there is a camera involved. So! When Anna texted me a few weeks ago and asked me to photograph her when we were in Kansas City, I responded as any older sister would by saying this:

“I’ll photograph you if you get in water for me.”

And with that? A photo session was born. We took these photographs right near the house I grew up in – the field photographs are a few miles from my parents’ house and the water photographs were taken in a kiddie pool in their backyard – and shooting these was a total blast. Meet my sister (again!), y’all!

^^ The above photograph is my very favorite photograph of Anna that I’ve, like, ever taken. ^^

And story time! Whenever I mentor or teach classes and the topic of capturing personality comes up, I always say this: Rather than telling people to smile constantly while I photograph them, I tell them to look at me. And here’s why! If someone was photographing me and they asked me to look at them, I’d look over and start laughing. If someone asked my sister to look at them for a photograph, she’d smolder the camera. And the photograph above? That’s totally the smolder I always speak of!

And another story! Initially, I was going to photograph Anna in a lake. We headed to the one closest to my parents’ house and it was packed. Then we headed to another. And another. And another! I’m not sure what party was going on in Lee’s Summit, Missouri on the 28th of June but all the lakes were packed and, instead of shooting in lake water, we headed back to my parents’ house and photographed Anna in the kiddie pool my parents keep in the backyard for their grandkids. Henry gave us a major stink eye the entire time we took these and it was hilarious. How gorgeous is my sister?!
