I am so excited to be writing another installment of Choose a Wedding Photographer You LOVE this morning!

Read Part One: What Do You Want? Here ]

———-

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since the last time I wrote this series!

And today? We’re taking that last blog post a little further.

So! You’ve decided what you want in your wedding photographs. What do you do now?

Finding a wedding photographer can be difficult. While most everyone knows a photographer or has a friend who loves photography or a relative that owns a nice camera, finding a wedding photographer that fits your needs is a completely different ball game than having your photographs taken for fun by your cousin or hearing your mom gush about her friend that just took up photography. We live in an age where we see photographs all of the time- social media websites like Instagram and Facebook and Pinterest are flooded with imagery and, well, nearly every article and blog post and everything-on-the-Internet includes a photograph.

And as a photographer? I LOVE those photographs!

But! Here’s the thing: As I mentioned in the last blog post, no photographer is the same.

This is a good thing. A really, really good thing. If you know what you want in a wedding photographer, it’s likely that a handful of photographers will stick out to you over the rest, even if you know nothing about photography. This will be a lot less likely to happen if you do not know what you want, even if you love photography. For example, I love quilts. From the time I was little, I have always loved them and we have so many quilts and blankets that it is borderline ridiculous- I mean, I don’t even sit on the couch without a blanket. But! Despite this love! I do not know how to quilt and, maybe more importantly, I have no desire to learn how to quilt. I love to crochet blankets and I can whip up a baby receiving blanket in half an hour but, when it comes to quilts, I know nothing. And even though I know nothing about quilts? I can still find one that I love.

I’ll put it this way: If I am looking for a large, light colored quilt and I go quilt shopping, it is going to be pretty easy for me to reject small sized quilts in bright colors, large sized quilts in dark colors, and small sized quilts in light colors. If I went quilt shopping not knowing what I wanted, it wouldn’t be easy for me to reject these. But! If I know what I want and go to a quilt shop with fifty quilts to sell, I can automatically slice my options down to five or six quilts that fit what I want. And from there? I just have to figure out what I like best.

When you know what you want in a wedding photographer, you will be able to do this. Since photographers offer unique styles and no two photographers are the same, you will be able to easily narrow your choices down to several photographers rather than several hundred and, from there, can just figure out whose work- or which photographer- you like best. It really is that simple.

And sometimes when you least expect it? Things just fit. When I went to find my wedding dress, I want to a boutique in Sandy, Utah, after falling in love with a dress online. The dress was incredibly lacy, had a ribbon around the waist, a slight V-neck and high sleeves and, as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to try it on. But! When I got to the store, I walked in and immediately fell in love with a sample dress that had been put on the floor (and not the website!) that morning. The dress was not lacy, as I had always imagined, but was vintage inspired, had three tiers, a white ribbon around the ribs, high sleeves and, when I put it on, I didn’t even want to try on any other wedding dress, including the one I went to to the store for.

This can happen with your wedding photographer- maybe you think you want one thing but are completely smitten when you see something a little similar but a little different. And if this does happen? You should do everything you can to secure that photographer. If you fall in love with something unexpected, go for it! Because when you know? You just know.
