The Dog Days of Summer | Hello, August!

Our lives lately are full of sunscreen, chlorine, and tumbles at the jungle gym.

The boys have been in swimming lessons at Wilson Park ever since early July. I’m the crazy mom that signs her kids up for back to back swim lessons and then feeds them Chick-fil-A or snow cones at least twice a week. My kids are little fishes and it has been so fun watching them as they’ve gained more confidence in the water this summer. Max and Henry are both thunderbolts of energy and, last week, they had a few days where they couldn’t keep their feet on the ground. Max fell face first off the monkey bars. Henry fell face first on concrete. Max belly flopped into water so hard that his stomach stayed bright red for, like, the next six hours. Nothing holds these boys of mine back. They are full steam ahead all of the time no matter what they are doing and the past few weeks with them have been a little slice of heaven. A slice of heaven filled with fart jokes and Raffi music and afternoons spent playing Super Mario Brothers but heaven nonetheless. They are the best.

We’ve had a slight obsession with Briar Rose lately and ate there, like, three times last week. Don’t judge us! Their food is so good no matter the meal and Max has I have fallen in love with their cupcakes… and their cheesecake, too.

Also, Henry found my Instax Camera the other day and promptly took eight photographs of the carpet. He was super proud of his photographs and doesn’t understand why I won’t buy him a new pack of film so he can take more photographs. In unrelated news, I now understand why my dad used to balk every time I needed at least three disposable cameras every other week when I was in junior high and high school. #sorrynotsorry

^^ Those haircuts, y’all! Max and Henry typically have long hair but, every summer, Andrew buzzes their hair. It’s become a bit of a family tradition and, this year, Henry flinched while Andrew was cutting his hair. This led to his hair being cut so short he looked bald. Henry was super proud of this – he came into my room saying “I look like Uncle Nathan!!” – and, while it was super funny, I mourned his hair for a good three days. It’s finally growing back and I’m thrilled! ^^

Around the same time Andrew buzzed the boys’ hair off, I pulled a canister of paint from our garage (I bought the paint like six months ago) and started painting our living room mauve. I am obsessed with the color – it is what living room dreams are made of! – but I ran out of paint and, for the past three weeks, our living room has been two different colors. Whoops!

And last but not least! I am bad at lots of things (who isn’t?!) but I am really bad at the following:

– Reading spoilers for TV shows, movies, and books –

– Wearing lipstick –

– Cutting Andrew’s hair without nicking his neck –

– Replying to Instagram comments –

– Photographing my kids and our everyday moments and surroundings –

I’ll probably never remember to wear lipstick and I’ll probably always read spoilers for my favorite shows and books months before they even come out but, on Monday, I took five minutes and photographed a few favorite spots in our home. We have officially been living in our house for a year and, if possible, I love it more every single day. Seriously, I didn’t even know how hard you could love a house until Andrew and I built our very own!

Also, I bought the “Never Grow Up” pillow pictured below a few weeks ago and it’s not working. Maxwell starts kindergarten today! I should join the PTO, right?!
